SMPBR - Smart Modular Photo BioReactor
Smart modular photobioreactor for flexible and scalable algae cultivation within controlled environment
Overview
Scalable platform
Compact dimensions and cost-efficient design allows
deployment in large numbers, enabling accelerated
research.
Fully automatable system
The open API enables full remote access, control,
programming, and automation of each unit.
Devices can operate independently or be synchronized
in controlled groups, providing maximum experimental flexibility.
Modular architecture
The device consists of interchangeable modules that
can be adapted to specific experimental needs. The
lighting system can be easily reconfigured (color, intensity), and spectral
detectors with different wavelengths can be used for
precise monitoring. The platform can be further
expanded with external modules such as additional
pumps, temperature sensors, or other monitoring devices.
Open-source technology
Complete documentation, including mechanical design, electronics, and source
code is fully open-source. This ensures
full transparency and allows users to
modify and
adapt the system to their specific research
requirements.
Easy handling
The smart design with a replaceable bottle enables
fast and simple handling, reducing downtime during culture exchange and
maintenance while ensuring smooth experimental workflows.

Software
Semi-manual control via a web interface that allows you to set the runtime and
component parameters (such as temperature, mixing intensity, lighting). Subsequently
an experiment is run where the user can manipulate the settings.
Database, which can be either local (on the reactor itself) or on an external defined
server. Multiple reactors can export to a dedicated server at once. This data can be
analysed for comparison or anomalies can be automatically detected
The project "Advanced Monitoring Technologies to Increase the Yield of Microalgal
Bioreactors" is funded by the European Union. The main objective of the project
is to develop a new generation of the SMPBR 2.0 modular photobioreactor, equipped with
advanced sensors and distributed control, based on knowledge transfer from CzechGlobe.
